Improvements to Socket Email
New email equipment offers more capacity, faster processing.

Socketeer Dave Sill shows off new email equipment.

Coffee intake around the office has been up for the past few weeks.

A few Socketeers have been pulling overnight shifts in order to move thousands of Socket email accounts to shiny, brand new equipment.

We’re all getting more email nowadays. And as the number of messages sent over Socket’s network has increased, so has the load on our old servers.

In order to keep things running smoothly—and to plan for future growth—new servers were purchased, offering faster processing and more storage capacity.

"This upgrade to our mail system will help accommodate our recent growth," said Dave Sill, Socket’s email administrator. "Plus, it will be easy for us to expand even more down the road when we need to."

The storage capacity of the new equipment is 17.5 times greater than our old servers. As the available space on our old servers dwindled, Socket’s email and Web administrators knew it was time to upgrade.

They have been and will continue moving accounts during the overnight hours, and there’s no downtime when an account is moved. You will still be able to send and receive mail as usual. You might only notice a slight delay in receiving some messages during the time your account is transferred.

The equipment upgrade will also pave the way for a new-and-improved version of Socket Webmail. The new site will feature the ability to store messages in folders, create an address book of frequent contacts and manage spam email directly from your inbox, rather than a separate site. Watch your email inbox for more information about changes to Socket’s Webmail.

If you have any questions about the maintenance, please give us a call at 1-800-762-5383.

And don't worry about our Socketeers. We'll make sure to keep plenty of coffee brewing until the transition is over.

Dear Techie: How can I customize privacy settings on Facebook?

If you use Facebook to stay connected to friends and family, you've probably wondered what information you post is visible to the public. Facebook is constantly evolving, and the number of ways you can customize your privacy settings keeps expanding.

It can all be a bit overwhelming, but here are a few quick, simple options to start with. They'll give you an idea of what people can see on your profile and how you can control what goes on there.

1. Preview your public profile.
Find out how your profile looks to public viewers with the Preview Your Profile tool. You can even see how your profile looks to a specific friend by typing his or her name in the box at the top of the page.

2. Control the settings for each of your individual posts.
Control who can see specific posts. For example, make a specific post visible only to your friends and another visible to everyone who visits your profile page. Just use the drop-down menu next to the "Post" button when updating your status.
Control who can view a specific status update on your Facebook profile.

The posts default to the most recent privacy setting you selected. So don't forget to change the setting back on your next post.

3. Review friends' posts that tag you before they appear on your profile.
Review posts and photos your friends tag you in before they appear on your profile, and reject them if desired. Select "Privacy Settings" from the triangle menu in the upper right corner of the screen, then click "Edit Settings" under "How tags work." Toggle the "Tag Review" option to "Enabled" if you wish to review tags before they appear on your profile.
Choose to review all tags on Facebook before they appear on your profile.

One final bonus tip: Facebook and its various settings change frequently. Stay on top of changes by "liking" Facebook's Security Page.

Socketeer Spotlight: Jeff Gray, Programmer/Analyst

Jeff Gray with Socket

Jeff Gray was chosen as Socket’s You-Make-the-Difference-Award winner for October. He joined the Socket team two years ago and is responsible for building tools and reports for use throughout the company.

"Always willing to help, Jeff never says something can’t be done," said a co-worker who nominated him for the award. "He will find a way. And he has. He makes a difference."

Jeff is originally from Lebanon, Missouri. He and his girlfriend, Jennifer, like to travel. Their most recent journeys took them to Nashville, TN and Broken Arrow, OK. He also likes playing video games and cheering for the St. Louis Cardinals.

"I have the privilege of being part of a great team here at Socket," Jeff says. "I couldn't be happier!"

Socket's You-Make-the-Difference Award is given monthly to the employee who best exemplifies Socket's Core Values and Beliefs. Recipients of the award are nominated and voted on by their peers. To view other winners, visit www.socket.net/ymtd.
